2015-2016 Federal Duck Stamp by Nambroth 2015-2016 Federal Duck Stamp by Nambroth
I am honored to share that my painting of a pair of Ruddy Ducks won the Federal Duck Stamp Contest this year.

It is 7" x 10" Acrylic on board.

The Federal Duck Stamp program is a US-based conservation program. The stamp itself started in 1934 as a hunting stamp. The duck stamp has since evolved into something a lot more. Now, not only hunters buy them, but a great many birders and other people interested in conservation buy them. They can also be used as a pass to gain access to a National Wildlife Refuge. Indeed, 98 cents of every dollar that the stamp sells for goes directly to buying or preserving federal wildlife refuges and wetlands (the other two cents covers the costs of printing them and such). This does not just benefit ducks and hunters; a huge number of species, all the way from protozoa to large birds and mammals depend on wetlands. They are prime birding locations. Wetlands provide vital natural management of our watersheds and waterways, both for humans and other species. Amphibians and insects, birds and plants, many species alike depend on these areas. Wetlands are of incredible benefit. To date, the duck stamp program alone has raised over $850 million for this purpose. As an artist, none of the money from the sale of stamps comes back to me. And that is great— that means it is all going to conservation. Further, the stamp program can license the image out to be sold on merchandise and products. The sale of these products (the part that the USFWS gets) goes directly into the Migratory bird Conservation Fund.
Anyhow, anyone can buy one, and it is is all good. If you are keen on one, check at your local post office, or you can do it on the internet too: www.fws.gov/duckstamps/stamps.…

Even if you can’t or don’t want to buy one, it’s really a great thing to get excited about. A lot of people don’t even know this program exists, nor the enormous amount of good it does! Plus, let’s be honest here— many of my friends that will read this are artists too. You know that art is often overlooked. Glance at many grade school art programs across the country… the cuts are happening. Some schools don’t even have art any more. I don’t know about you, but man that is depressing. I would be so very sad indeed if the only government-run, nationally recognized art contest went away.
Even if you are not hot on ducks, that alone should put a little wrinkle in your heart. Let’s let people know about the Duck Stamp program, and why it’s so awesome! Encourage others to help in conservation, and if you are an artist or know one in the U.S., you can encourage them to enter the art competition every year!

Ruddy remarkable!, and well done.
Its getting hard to find ruddy ducks in England now since the government started culled them a few years ago.

I understand that they are quite invasive there? So perhaps that is for the best.

The're not a real problem in the UK but the birds that are here often fly over to continental Europe especially Spain where they hybridize with the White-headed ducks which are endangered. I support the cull but will miss them all the same.

oh WOW.
I've been collecting these for a while now, my dad and I used to go goose hunting every year when I was a little girl in a corn field. He'd give me his old license with the stamp on it.
I work in a sporting goods store now called Bob Ward's in Montana, and I do the licensing, I'll be keeping my eyes out this coming year for your stamp! I'll have to buy one myself :D

Congrats on winning, I know that it is an extremely tough competition and a great honor to win. I personally like yours WAY more that the 2014 stamp I've seen this year.

Wow, I did not know that!
It's so cute, I told this one old man at the counter the other day who was buying his permits that I found the artist of the 2015 stamp and his eyes just lit up. He collects them too and has been since he was little. I showed it to him on my iPhone and he started telling me all about that specific species of duck xD
He also said to tell you excellent work.

I've followed your stamp attempts over the years, and noted how you improved with each painting.  Congratulations on winning this year!

I love how you captured the feather types that change from the breast around the shoulder and further along to the wing.  Although small in detail, the little roil of water behind the drake really adds to a sense of motion.

The details in the feathers, including the sheen and flow is excellent. The whole painting is so smooth, and the shading is wonderful. I like the reflection of the bill on the neck. This is an amazingly realistic piece of work!

Congrats!   I didn't know you were a DeviantArt member (well, I knew who you were here, but didn't know your real name).  I would love to enter the duck stamp program, but the entry fees are a bit high and I don't think I'm good enough.  My favorite duck to paint would be a gadwall.

I wrote an article on your work for Examiner, but I could only link to your artwork as I didn't have permission to use it.   The title of the article was "2014 Duck Stamp winning subject a San Diego favorite" and talked about the duck stamp program and about ruddy ducks.  Here is a link:  www.examiner.com/article/2014-…
