A Special Kind of Blue - Hyacinth Macaw by Nambroth A Special Kind of Blue - Hyacinth Macaw by Nambroth
Anyone that's met one of these birds for more than a few minutes know that they are a special kind of blue!

The Hyacinth Macaw [link] is a gorgeous parrot, and is the largest parrot in the world with exception to the Kakapo, which weighs more (the benefit of living on the ground). These gorgeous birds are endangered primarily due to habitat loss, and illegal smuggling of birds for the pet trade (illegal, black market).

Here in the USA we don't really need to worry about wild-caught birds being for sale any more, however something that we can do at home easily to help these birds is to source our coffee carefully! The biggest threat though is loss of habitat due to deforestation-- for agriculture. Coffee and the modern world's thirst for it is one such crop that is really hurting the land. Read more here:

Watercolors on rough paper. The circles around the bird are done in copper leaf; that is real copper applied to special glazing. The rough edges are intentional, to go with the crunchy watercolor edges. Sadly, metallic copper scans poorly. It looks way prettier in person, and flashes nicely.

Approximately 15" x 15"

Truly beautiful work!

I have had the blessing to get to be able to interact quite frequently with a sixteen-year-old hyacinth macaw. They are such majestic and magnificent creatures!

Brilliant! The blues just glow, and the background is the perfect foil [no pun intended] for the Macaw.

When I saw this on your blog, I thought it was a photo and you photoshopped it to have that background... until I looked closer. VERY REALISTIC!!!

Wait, did you say this is done with watercolor?
I'm truly amazed. I wouldn't even begin to know how to get such brilliant blues with watercolor.
Everything I have tried to do in it just gets washed out like crazy.
You're obviously a true artist and amazingly good at what you do.

Do you use tube watercolors or dry pans? I only have dry blobs of watercolor to work from, myself, so I use very little water when I am going for a rich color, and make a thicker paint out of the dry blobs. It's easier to do with a tube (since it comes out moist), but it's not impossible with the dry. Of course, the danger with a thicker watercolor is that it tends to be more opaque, so you have to apply it with this in mind. :) Anyhow, the thicker the paint the more saturated the color, though it can also dry darker. I hope this helps!

I've done a bit with both. Mostly dry pans though.
Ah ok, I think I was just going on layers but that didn't work out as well as I wanted. I'll keep all of that in mind and play around a bit more.
Thank you.

At first glance, I thought it was a picture of a real hyacinth photoshopped over a watercolor background! Great detail on the feathers and the coloration!

I use rough paper almost exclusively, and a few different brands of watercolors! Davinci, Daniel Smith, and a few various others.
