Atlantic Brant by Nambroth Atlantic Brant by Nambroth
My submission for this year's Federal Duck stamp contest!

A pair of Atlantic Brant.

I actually painted this a few months ago, but couldn't share it until now.

An explanation into why I painted this the way I did:

When I was in CT this spring, there was a magical event. Magical to me, anyhow! My husband, his brother, mom and I visited the shore on a compound tide (sun and moon pulling the tide) so the tide was out much lower than even a 'normal' low tide. This exposed rocks that normally stay underwater and they were covered with beautiful Irish Moss (algae) that was sort of glowing yellowish orange in the light. A brant climbed up on one of the rocks while its buddies surfed around it, feeding. It was such a cool scene that I experienced with family and I knew I wanted to paint it, even if it didn't stand a good chance of winning. Which I know is sort of silly, but I had to try!

Acrylic on board, 9" x 12"

This would make a beautiful state or federal duck stamp!

Thank you! I tried for the Federal with it last year, but it wasn't up to par (my fault!). I will try again this year with a new painting. :)

John, what an honor for you to say that! I will do my best, but I would be surprised to make it past some of the big names! They sure can paint a duck! I will let you know. :) The closest I have come so far is 4th place in North Carolina, and second place in Oregon for their conservation stamp.

Fourth and second place is fantastic due to the amount of competition you are up against, I have faith you will win!

I just love the water droplets down the front of that left goose. Kudos for painting something with a bit of "you" in it instead of sticking to what the contest favours - nice to see something a bit different, anyway! ;)

Thank you! I knew right away it meant that I'd have less of a chance to do well, but I was okay with that. It's an honor to be part of the contest anyhow!

It blows my mind that you haven't won one of these competitions; your paintings are always amazing! Can't even imagine how good the winners must look, but don't think for a minute that you're not good enough to win!

So happy to see this one in a much better scan and larger! :aww: I still reeeeally like your colors in this one. They're all fairly light and warm, which I know always works better for stamps than darker colors. I love that algae too! I think it really helps to bring all the warm light and darker colors together. Now that I look at this one for a while, in my personal opinion, I feel the composition would feel more "right" if the standing brant's body was facing the same way as the one swimming. It just kind of feels that it would fill the space better--lol, do you know what I'm talking about?

I agree entirely! I struggled with composition on this one, and fought with it forever. Then after I sent it off, I thought of a million things I could have changed to make it better! Doh!

I think that's one of the hardest things to figure out--I know I always struggle with it. I think I tend to "overthink" compositions a lot, when in reality they could be a lot simpler. Lol, and then you know exactly what to do with it after the contest, naturally. :XD:

It's closer than Niantic. It surrounds the Sikorsky Airport in Stratford.. and we are just about 33 miles from NYC.. you should come see it.. we have a beautiful lighthouse out there too.. I have photos of that in my gallery too.. there's always egrets and herons and redwing blackbirds.. all kinds of things out there

Only a little closer, considering I'm still 6 hours from NYC! But I will try to check it out next time I am on that side of the state. :)
