Drifting Dreams Moonstone Pendant by Nambroth Drifting Dreams Moonstone Pendant by Nambroth
This is a Moonstone carefully hand wrapped in Argentium sterling silver. This pendant rolls with delightful bursts of icy blue, cyan, and even an amber colored 'bolt'.

Moonstone is a fantastic stone that can appear milky at first, until you move it and the stone comes alive with colors flashing within. The effect is similar in appearance to opal fire. It is called chatoyancy/labradorescence, which is a fancy way of saying that the color 'flashes' or 'rolls' across the stone, like cat's-eye but far more vibrantly. It is a natural stone, and the effect is caused by refractive layers within the stone.

FAQ stuff, please read before asking:

- Yes! I do sell these! They are for sale here: [link]

-I hand wrap these pieces with nothing more than my fingers and some bitty pliers.
-I purchase the stones already cut and polished from rock and gem shows.
-My silver is purchased directly from a precious metals silver refinery.
-I use several different gauge and shaped wires in each piece.
-My methods are 100% self taught, unplanned, and haphazard and I do not plan on creating tutorials on how to make these. If you want to learn wire-wrapping there are already some good tutorials out there if you search on Google. Just please be respectful of the work and years I've invested in learning how to create my pendants and don't directly copy my work (I rely on these to pay my bills!).

Thanks for looking. :)

Now, when you say hand-wrapped, you do mean PLIER-wrapped, right? Sorry, I'm just starting out. ^^

Some with the pliers, yes! But a lot of it is with my hands. I only use pliers when I need to, for fear of marking the silver up.

How do you work with the silver like that? I know silver is a soft metal, but I haven't the faintest idea where to begin metalworking in order to make my own jewelry, for myself, my friends and to sell. Do you heat the silver first? Or does heating it alter it and screw up the final polish?

I mean, I can hunt for tutorials, but I need layman's terms, man. I learn by doing, but some metalworking-for-idiots 'this has worked for me' pointers from someone who does this is gonna be a great help.

I regret I wouldn't know the fist thing about proper heating of the silver; I simply work with it with my hands. My method is really haphazard and it's hard to describe. I will set the stone and then wing it, really. I never know what I'm going to do until I'm working with it. I pull the coils by using the metal's natural ductility-- that is, they way the silver 'wants' to bend. It's different for each gauge and each shape!! It took me about two years of working with it regularly to get a good feel for it. I mean that literally-- it's how the silver feels in hand and the way it responds to curling, and how much it resists and wants to retain its prior shape. I regret that my only advice is that it just takes time and playing with it hands on! Maybe someone more experienced than I am can help. I know that there are lots of workshops for wire wrapping, you might contact any local arts council that you have in your community to see if there are any classes. Sometimes these are offered at local libraries.
Sorry for writing you a book here. x_x

Oh no no, this helps! I can ask my friend's grandma, too, who used to make jewelry, and I can ask at the rock shop downtown. Trial and error is the best way to work, imo. Thanks for sharing!

I like the detail in the silver. Not only is it a casing for the moonstone, but even on its own it is an interesting piece. The combination of the two is remarkable! ^^

Love how the swirls of the silver match the moonstone so well. Also love how you take a very serendipitous approach to your work. My only critique would be I think the chain looks a little to heavy for such a light feeling design.

Kudos on doing this only with your hands. I've been metal working for the past 4 or 5 days with tools and my fingers are throbbing and swollen. x__x

I haven't worked with a jeweler's saw before, but once I had a batch of really sharp half round wire and when I was straightening a piece (stupidly between my finger and thumb), it cut my thumb open to the bone like a knife. x_x I didn't even realize it until I saw that the silver was IN my thumb and gosh where was all that blood coming from?!
(I didn't make any jewelry with that silver)
