This was done for a children's magazine, to very specific guidelines. I'll repeat that for those that would critique this: I had very specific guidelines for both subject matter, composition, lighting, and coloration. This was painted for a children's magazine.
Now then: this is very silly, cliche, unrealistic, and over the top. They'd probably all be eating one another, not to mention that the mythologies come from all different parts of the world. I know! It's best just to smile.
Since I know someone will ask, here are what the creatures are, in my interpretation, from upper left to right:
Dragon (western) Pegasus Gryphon Thunderbird
Wyvern (the orange fellow)
Tree Ent Three Unicorns (western) Hippogryph Centaur Dragon (Eastern) Minotaur
Sphinx (Egyptian- mythology reveals that they had a lion's body and either the head of a human, ram, or falcon) Faerie Manticore Kirin (qilin) Water Sprite Satyr (or faun)
This was painted almost exclusively with the Oil Pastel tool in Corel Painter, over at least 120 hours (I lost count). The original is very large. When I finished it I sat back and laughed for at least 15 minutes, because it's so ridiculous (that and trying to finish it in under 2 weeks made me insane).
I know I get a lot of people asking this so I'll say it here: I am not legally allowed to let anyone use this painting in any way. Period! Sorry about that!
Omigosh i LOVE this picture! And i am currently writing a story about a place where fantasy creatures live and this is almost EXACTLY how i imagined it!!
This is fantastical! ( Literally ) I love this, it is perfect! I might have to add you to my watch list! Your paintings are truly amazing!
