Green Heron Watercolor Study by Nambroth Green Heron Watercolor Study by Nambroth
A study of a green heron, waiting for a fish. I loved watching these guys fish in the crick across the street from my parents house.

Just me experimenting and playing around. The heron's body is a bit too stout. That's okay, this was a learning experience.
Various references used for markings, but nothing directly.

Watercolor on 6" x 12" cold press.

Very pretty; I agree with you about the body, but overall I think this is beautiful and captures this small heron very well. I was at the SF zoo and they were feeding the rescued white pelican that lives in their pond and there was a green heron along with a few snowy egrets standing right next to the zoo keeper hoping for a handout. They were so fearless I asked if they were part of the exhibit, but they were just wild birds hanging out hoping for a handout.

Very nice. I really like the heron's pose, leaning down towards the water like that. Great colouring too, especially the way the background "drips" down, and the reflections in the water.

have you used several brands of water color or pretty much just stuck to a single one? I'd really like to get into doing water colors but I'm not sure of the brand to get as I know some just aren't worth the money. was just curious if you could provide a tip on that.

very nice heron, your birds are coming out really well. ever thought of doing an ibis, with their iridescent feathers? blue-crowned motmot might be fun too. ^-^

I can't really afford to buy different brands of watercolor to test them. I have some Van Gogh brand that I use now.

That's pretty good for a practice  You use the white of the paper perfectly. D'you use pans or tubes? Just out of curiosity :XD:

I use pans, because I tend to travel with them. :) So my entire tray and palette is less than 5" x 4".
