Phoenix - Cinder by Nambroth Phoenix - Cinder by Nambroth
Commissioned by the amazing :iconmanojalpa: .. she gave me artistic freedom to design for her a phoenix mask! My inspiration came from barbets (mostly bearded barbets) and hornbills. A little off the beaten path for a phoenix but I had a lot of fun!

The resin blank is from :iconcrystumes: and is one of her beautiful crow/raven blanks. I then sculpted and sanded and sculpted on it for a jillion years to form the beak shape and ridges, along with nostrils and scales around the eyes. Then I carefully furred it and individually set several hundred feathers into the crest.

Here's a doofy little video: [link]

Anyhow, I finished this in time for AC! YAY so this costume will be running around there I hope!

I wanted to mention: Last time I got a lot of inquiries when I posted a mask! These take me ages to complete, and I am really picky about only using high quality materials. Because of the HUGE time investment (seriously, nearly a month of steady daily work for this one!) please be advised that the price point for similar realistic and very detailed masks tends to edge into the 4-digit range. Also, I cannot cast resin so the blank must be outsourced. Keep this in mind if you send inquiries. :)

I hope you won't mind me asking some questions and forgive me for being a bother!

--What would be the best approach to do accomplish feathers into a mask like this?

---I understand that you glue them one @ a time.. I take it into the foam construction underneath?

----To get that awesome (or similar design) one would simply sculpt, sand, sculpt and sand until happy....
Then paint the color onto the beak? My guess would be Acyclics would be the best paint to do such?

I'm interested because I want to make a feathered mane for my tropical tigress Fursuit and then do the same to a griffin Fursuit I'm hoping to accomplish afterwards in the future!

Lastly, and I know questions can/will be annoying; How would I tackle setting feathers into my mask being a learning beginner? :meow:

Btw, I'm also going to watch your video as well! ;)

This. Is. Just. An. Epic. Partial Fursuit! I'm simply floored and how superb it is!
Keep up the stunning job, Hun! ^^

Each feather is trimmed and glued individually into the fur.
I use acrylics, yes, then use a spray coat to help prevent chipping during wear.
Just have patience setting the feathers; I only started doing this recently myself. Use whatever technique works best for you. No one taught me. :)

Alright, cool!
Yay! Glad I was thinking the right medium - I'll remember the spray coat as well! =3
Sounds good, I shall do my best. Really? I would not have guessed that! =]

And thanks so much for your answer! I really appreciate it!

So far I have taken only a few commissions for masks.. they take a very long time to make! I probably will only make 2-3 per year.
