Redhead - Watercolor Study by Nambroth Redhead - Watercolor Study by Nambroth
A Redhead duck, seemingly pleased to be in the water... As most ducks are prone to be.

More experimenting and learning on my part. I don't think I'm happy unless I'm throwing salt at watercolors...
This fellow was inspired by the lovely creative commons waterfowl photos by law_kevin on Flickr.

Watercolor on 6" x 12" cold press.

Your style of depicting waterfowl is very interesting. I really like it though! The colorful and blotchy background gives them a lot of character. And not to mention that the ducks themselves are very well done. Nice work!!

The only problem with entering the Federal, or any state run, Duck Stamp competition is that they are very realistic to the point of counting feathers to make sure that you do not have too many, or too few. It is very rare to see any kind of abstraction in the duck or the background in a winning stamp ...
Having said that, it would be fun to see if your stuff could make it! You do a really great job with the ducks, it all depends on who the judges are for that year, and how much abstraction they might allow.

Oh, I wouldn't be entering with a watercolor like this. These are just for learning. I'd never enter with a piece like this, but they are fun to do in the interim.
I've researched quite a lot into the duck stamp. :) I don't think I'll place high, realistically, but it won't be for a lack of trying.

Great work! I'm envious. I really want to do watercolors but I'm brand new and also retarded apparently cause I can't make anything look right yet XD.

Out of curiosity, how long did this one take you?

A few days... at least 16-20 hours I'd guess, though it might be more. I didn't keep exact track. :)

Anyone can do what I do, if they really want to. Most do not want to take the time and effort to try. That's how artists who don't try very hard comfort themselves ...

I have to agree with you. Eiji Yoshikawa said something brilliant, didn't he? I'm glad you take your art so seriously; it's really refreshing to see. I'm not an artist myself, so I can't totally understand the feeling of creating art, but I do write so I can comprehend the feeling of creating something wonderful. And it really is all about hard work. :)
