Spix's Macaw Feather by Nambroth Spix's Macaw Feather by Nambroth
This is a Spix's Macaw.

The Spix's Macaw is believed to be extinct in the wild, and critically endangered in captivity. Its only hope remains in the remaining 78 (known) in captivity.

These beautiful macaws are one of several critically endangered parrots (and one of hundreds of critically endangered birds) that it is only with awareness, education, and steps to stop destroying vital habitat and stop the illegal pet trade will we have a chance at saving these guys and others in their situation. Sadly the Spix's macaws in captivity are owned mostly by private individuals, and it is proving difficult to get them to put aside differences and politics to work together to save this species.

You can learn more about the Spix's Macaw here:

This feather will be donated to and up for auction at the Anthrocon Charity Auction 2008- all proceeds will be donated to Parrot Rescue.

Painted with acrylic paints on a blue and gold Macaw feather (which was moulted/shed naturally from a healthy, happy parrot!) and adorned with a natural sapphire.

Ah, good idea :XD: I love Spix's, they're very special. I also think your idea of painting on feathers is very clever, the end result is brilliant.

I love them too. I hope they have enough genetic diversity among those left to keep the species going.

Ooh, Nambroth, I'm working on a painting of two Spix's macaws fighting right now! (Since Feb.) It's from a picture in the book, "Bird". I'll show you when I'm done if you want!

It's really beautiful work. I adore that You use art to support wildlife. Actually, I can't find a lot of information of these macaws today. How many of them are alive or do people still try to breed them if some private persons have a pair or just one bird? It's awful thing if they are all dead...
If I could do smth for them I would... Just I don't know how can I help...

They are considered to be extinct in the wild. There are about 73 known individuals in captivity...

A macaw painted on a macaw feather. Cool. It's so nice to see an animal painted on a feather of that animal (even if it's not a spix macaw's feather) instead of the default popular quadruped. I like the character you gave the spix.

And its really cool that you donated it for an auction to help preserve the animal pictured. How did the auction go?

I believe it sold for $85.00 -- I was unable to attend the auction but a friend did.

Your work is truly amazing, I must go through your gallery more when I get home! Quick question, forgive me if its in your faq or something, hoe do you paint on them without having the feathers split on you?

Wow, that's beautiful! I love these "feather paintings" and I think this is the first painting of Spix's Macaw I've seen. You've done great job with this, I don't even understand how anyone can paint with acryllics on a feather like that.

its so sad wat people do to our wildlife, like where i live the paradise parrot got completely wiped out by farmers clearing the habitats and food source of these birds, the sheep ate the grain they ate and the ant-mounds that the birds lived in and made nests in were all bulldozed. the birds were also killed for their feathers (the males) because of their lovely plumage. the last paradise parrot found alive was a male which died not long after it was found, it is now in a museum. its so sad and angering wat we humans do, i do hope that the spix macaw is repopulated, its quite a gorgeous species, its so sweet that u did that painting and and donated the money towards repopulating the birds. at least there are a small handfull of nice and decent people in this world we live in

how exactly did you learn to do that? If the feather is the size of feather I'm thinking it is, than how did you paint so tiny? I know, stupid questions, but it's just so amazing!
