On a trip to the West Coast of the US this year, I encountered a very friendly Townsend's Warbler. This little fellow followed me around as I took photos of ducks and at one point was perching on and around my feet. I was really enamored with him and knew I had to paint his portrait!

This painting makes use of moderate impasto for three-dimensional effects.

Acrylic on 7" x 5" hardboard.

Are you using photo refs for all these or do you paint them from mind ?

Sort of a combination! My mind is not sharp enough to remember all the tiny details, so I use photos I've taken to help 'remind' me of how I felt when I saw the scene, and to help fill in the memory gaps. I wish I had a photogenic memory!

Ah, such a handsome mister! I can tell you love birds... something in the art shows, although I'd be hard pressed to say what it was.
