This was my first venture into the mysterious land of 300lb. rough watercolor paper! Boy it sure is different. I haven't used it enough to judge yet, though.
This is a study of a tree swallow. This isn't meant to be a serious painting as it's mostly about me exploring and learning about the medium and this new paper. Watercolors on 5.5" x 10" 300lb rough. |

Why do you prefer it, out of curiosity?

I like that you dont have to worry about it staying flat and can really saturate places that need a dreamy quality. The paper is only thirsty because you didnt saturate it. IF you make a mistake you can go over it in acrylic. I did a huge Jack Kerouac illustration and I needed the hood of a 53 Merc white and I did that in the acrylic.
As with anything it takes practice.
Have you checked out Piu-min? She only paints on strathmore illustration board.
So it all depends on the look you want.
Every paper has it's own look. Canson stays transparent while big brother arches gets deeper.
