Tundra Swan Portrait by Nambroth Tundra Swan Portrait by Nambroth
8"x10" Oil
Capturing the subtle colors and luminescence of white plumage has always been quite a challenge for me, and were a real struggle at times when I painted only in acrylics. I can say that art panels can soar quite well if thrown in a similar manner as a Frisbee (canvasses are somewhat less aerodynamic when throwing a fit). Regardless, working in oils has opened up new possibilities for me and I really enjoyed working on this piece. Though it is only really visible in person, I used careful stroke direction and painted mostly directly, and the brush strokes create the impression of physical feathers when seen at an angle. Experienced oil painters may not find this novel, but as someone that is fresh to the medium, it's very exciting and new for me!

I think you've done a great job of capturing the particular texture of swan feathers here. They always look so soft and pudgy and pillowy and it makes me want to pick them up and smoosh them. If only swans weren't also fearsome badasses, I might actually get to do it, haha! :XD:

I guess letting my green cheek conure get all up in my face will have to suffice instead. ;)

Absolutely beautiful! the hue variety in the creams and whites is very lovely, and that shade of blue is a perfect complement. Keep up the great work!

These guys are really impressive! I've seen them pass through the city on their migration route, big and beautiful creatures.  I've also seen them while hunting up in the Arctic and it is incredible to see such large white birds in small ponds on the tundra, with no other animals in sight. I like that, with all the white and detail in the bird itself, that you went with a more abstract background.

Oh man, that sounds amazing!! I would love to see Alaska someday, in any capacity. The paintings I'm most fond of are almost always based on experiences I've had in person, like that.

You have a wonderful command of warm and cool 'off-whites,' I'm really impressed by this. I've been painting on wooden panels, maybe I should do some aerodynamics tests of my own . .     ; )

I think all artists think of spectacular ways to trash their paintings in frustration, from time to time!!

Your oil work has been amazing, I love seeing what you share! They often look like photos in the thumbnails, and the images are stunning in full view. I'm so glad you've found this medium that lets you paint in a more pain-free manner, and you're enjoying it so much!
