Wood Ducks and Lilies, Study by Nambroth Wood Ducks and Lilies, Study by Nambroth
5"x5" oil.
I've always wanted to paint a small woodland pond on a property that we would frequently visit. As a child I'd sneak up to the pond in hopes that I'd see wood ducks, and nearly every time I'd see them, catching them as they flew away! Many summers were spent camping on this property, and many autumns spent hunting with my father. As an adult, I'd always say to myself "I'll paint that pond and those wood ducks!". Sometimes you don't realize how much you will miss something until it's gone. After a lifetime of love and enjoyment, we lost permission to this land as it changed hands between the owner's family members. So now, I paint it with memories and a few photos gathered over the years, the feeling bittersweet. I will probably re-create this as a larger, more refined piece someday, though likely with some composition changes.

Lilies can look like such a jumbled mass, excellent job on defining them but still leaving them loose and impressionistic.  You have such a strong gallery. Don't give up on that land. Things that change once can change again, and there may be a day you'll be allowed back there.

Thanks for sharing the story that goes along with it.... I had a similar experience in my childhood. It's very sad because the original owners both died (one in a car accident and the other of Alzheimer's) and their daughter died from cancer beforehand so the property was sold to someone outside of their family. A lot of pets were buried there. I'm kind of sad the new owner has ripped out most of the trees.

Yeah, some of my really beloved pets are buried at the property we "lost" as well. :( It's the owner's right to do as they please of course, but it still makes me sad.

I'm glad I found someone else who went through the same thing. I don't live anywhere near there anymore. I guess it's better because I think I'd feel worse to see it keep changing.

You may lose land, but you won't lose the pleasant memories. I'm glad you're honoring those memories with your talent.

The water and the reflections on it is excellent. I would have struggled immensely with that. Nice job on the... what do you call it... the way the light is weird and colorful on the feathers of the male's head, like oil. I forget the term for that. Bah.

Haha. Mine are more like rusty old drawers than word files. :)
