As some of you noticed, I uploaded some work I did for the Flight of Dragons live action movie. This will be an independent film remake of the 1982 animated classic movie!

I grew up watching the original animated movie, every day of my childhood, perhaps more than once per day. I'm sure that my parents were quite sick of it, but they let me watch it anyhow. So, you can imagine my excitement that I was asked to create some quick paintings to illustrate a storyboard for the trailer. You can see those in my gallery!

They are using crowd-sourcing to fund this project, as they are doing things like hiring a professional orchestra to record the score, etc... neat stuff! If you want to learn more or want to chip in, the website will answer nearly all the questions you might have: www.flightofdragonsmovie.com/

If it doesn't, I'm sure that they wouldn't mind emails! They also have a facebook and are very responsive there: www.facebook.com/theflightofdr…

Happy dragon-ing!

Wow, I didn't know they were making a Flight of Dragons! That's so cool. I loved the animated movie. That's great you had a hand in the production.

i always had a huge love for the old film its just a bit older than me (by 4 years)
but i liked the idea of the dragon being large ever looked at a lizard those guys can be quite fat, so the idea of the dragons looking like balloons just supports the gas theory
also i didn't like the look of your Carolinus head/hat but that's only cause of im a fan of the film.
also the flight of dragons book i swear is like a animal guide more than a story i only saw it once when i was younger so correct me if im wrong

The final decision whether or not Carolinus will wear a skullcap or pointy hat is still up in the air. We haven't quite decided - but for these storyboards I asked Jennifer to make it different. And yes, "The Flight of Dragons" by Peter Dickinson is a [fiction] speculative natural history book, similar to DRAGONOLOGY.

im just worried it might be too LOTR that's all ,but I am interested on what you are doing though..
and hahh i don't remember the book i saw the book at school when i was 4-ish?
but now i wanna read The Dragon and the George .will you be more towards that? like the film is?

Our aim is to find a nice balance between both the film and novel. We are still at an early phase in this project, and the trailer has only been scripted and developed (to an extent). If we get all the funds needed to complete that then we'll start knocking out the entire story. We have ideas though!

Sounds brilliant. I was unfortunate to never have seen this movie, but I have seen clips on YouTube and I read the plot, and I must say I am very interested. I don't like the way they made the dragons look like hot air balloons though, but that's the only complaint I have about it.

That was a shared complaint about the animated film in general - but it relates to the concept of dragon flight and how they achieve lift (e.g., compartments inside their bodies which give rise etc). The Japanese animators also looked at the art of Wayne Anderson from "The Flight of Dragons" book where the dragons were likewise rotund. Our adaptation won't really stress this topic.

Well no ;) but I didn't like the Hobbit as much as I hoped I would.
Loved Flight of Dragons a lot! Had to buy both books it was based on (the art book & the novel).
Any movie with hydrogen filled dragons and death via. reciting a list of science disciplines is hard to beat...

Our incarnation of The Flight of Dragons will follow The Dragon and the George plot much more closely than Romeo Muller's screenplay for Rankin/Bass. We also have our own original content in mind, too! :)

The film is mostly based in the first book, with some changes. The second book... not much about it in the movie, in my opinion.
