Oops! I just realized... I forgot to share this!

I created a Patreon account a while ago. I know some folks aren't super fond of the idea, and that's okay. I can understand that; actually talking about it makes me feel nervous as if I am promoting myself too hard. I think this is a thing a lot of artists that are insecure with themselves feel? Anyhow, a bunch of very kind folks have encouraged me and ... while it still makes me feel slightly nervous, I must admit that it already HAS helped me set aside more time than I normally could, in order to make personal art. The giant chicken in the ocean ("Thunderous Tides") that I posted most recently came about because of this! So I suppose I am warming up to it. I love making things that I want to make, and I love making things that people seem to enjoy!

Anyhow, if you are at all interested in this, here's the link: www.patreon.com/nambroth

Even if you hate the idea, or simply can't take part (goodness knows I understand!!) please know that I value you all very much regardless of Patreon. All of the favorites, comments, watches, and even just your eyeballs sliding across my work means SO very much to me! I truly would not be able to do what I do without the online community. Thank you so much!!

I don't hate the idea at all. If (when? ;D ) I have the funds I'd totally pour it toward artists. I hope this is a successful endeavor for you!

Wow I agree with the others about this being a great idea!

By the way I see that on your Patreon account it says you are a full time artist. You have chickens too right? I breed and raise peafowl and I am in college and the only thing appealing to me so far is the idea of majoring in art. Nothing else really interests me enough. I like wildlife, but I don't like learning all of the cellular stuff and everything. I could never be a vet. I was just wondering if you can support your bird addiction being an artist? I guess with peafowl it is different though. There is more of a demand for chickens and less for peafowl. I don't want to have to sacrifice owning peafowl for having art as a profession so I was just wondering.

It is a tough balance. It took me >5 years of hard work to get to where I could find a balance being full time as an artist and supporting my 'hobbies'. I wanted chickens for... 10? Years before I could responsibly afford them, and I do live pretty simply and rarely buy things I don't need. I also don't breed my chickens, as sadly I have Marek's disease in my flock, so the only monetary value they give me is that they save me some money in groceries since I eat their eggs. I would keep them even if they didn't lay as I love them dearly, but they definitely are not money markers.
Each artist is different though. Some folks I know earn a lot more than what I do, working in art studios and the like.
I also now have a husband that will help support me if I ever hit a really bad dry spell.

Each person finds ways of making things work for them, but I won't lie-- it can be a struggle sometimes!

Thanks for your reply! If I go with a career in art hopefully I can get a good job being a graphic artist. I also have played around with the idea of being an art teacher maybe at the college level since I notice my college art teachers have a lot more freedom than my High School art teacher had. I will probably end up marrying my boyfriend and in high school he was training to be an engineer which I was excited about because there is money to be made there, but now he wants to be a director and I am not so sure about that since he doesn't make many videos but he should definitely go for what he likes. I keep weighing the idea if I should take over my mom's business or not. On one hand it would be super awesome to be my own boss and own a company, but on the other hand I have seen how stressful it can be and while I would get to work from home (which would be great because I would always be around to look after the birds) I am not sure if it would be a happy job or a miserable one. I just don't want to be stuck doing something I hate, but also I don't want to be so poor that I can't enjoy having birds and all of my dream aviary and yard fantasies I have with a pool that has a giant trellis going across it covered in grape vines with swings attached so you can swing over the pool and eat grapes. Also I want a nice garden and super nice long lasting planted aviaries for my birds. I hope I won't be too old before I see some of my dreams come true. I am already lucky to have gotten peafowl when I was in High School. Many people on Backyard Chickens who have peafowl did have to wait many years before they could own some. The future is always scary to think about, but I will just try hard at what I do and enjoy learning and figuring out what I would be best suited at doing. :)

That's a really cool idea, I'm glad it's available to you!  Congratulations on what you've gotten so far, and may it increase exponentially for you as the days go by.

I shall also pass this on to other artists I know, as it could help them out too.  Thank you!

"I know some folks aren't super fond of the idea" ....... wait... what? I can understand not personally wanting to donate, but there are people who are actively against this? I think it's a GREAT idea for people who can get use out of it. (I wish I could... damn I could use the extra money... and I've heard of some people even being able to drop to part time or even quit their day jobs because of it, which would be GREAT but that ain't gonna happen with me LOL I'm not consistent enough)

I've never heard of this before, but it looks like basically a way for you to get donations on the side so you don't have to focus as much on commissions? Pretty sweet deal for you :) Unfortunately I'm unable to help right now, but good luck :)

Pretty much! It's sort of like a tip jar, but online. :) And it's totally okay! Many folks are struggling to make ends meet, I know. I'd hardly expect it of anyone. :)

This is a beautiful idea! Whoever started this was simply ingenious!!! You know, this is a great way to support artists, especially those who need that support. Unfortunately, I cant help you here at this moment, but to be honest, when it comes to a point where I CAN, then I would certainly LOVE to invest in this.

Thanks for bringing this up!

I don't get why people are mad at what is essentially an empty guitar case than you can walk on by and it won't do anything to you. Maybe they feel guilty, but that's their problem, don't take it out on the musician.

I don't know why people would be mad about Patreon. I've only heard about it just now, but from my point of view it's essentially just paying you to make art, which is what a professional artist is anyway... Are people really mad about Patreon?

I'm happy for you, and don't worry about it. If people want to donate money they will, if they don't they wont. You're just giving them the option.
